Mixtape Bound in Sandpaper

Curated by Mike Corrao

Going into this I wasn’t sure what kind of work I wanted to highlight. So dodging any kind of constraints, I’ve instead picked five pieces of writing that are only connected by how good I think they are.

Each entry on this list is worth fawning over. Most of these authors have books under their belts as well, so if you’re into what you’ve read, consider checking out their longer projects.

I don’t know if there is a theme to any of this. If there is, it’s probably just my predictable taste, or my unconscious doing the work for me.

Lines

by Ali Raz

The encounter between shapes and electrical wires. Where something is wrong and I don’t know what.

Conscious Dark in Vertebrates

by Jason Kane

From Burning House Press’ August ‘non-nonfiction’ issue. In which Jason Kane extracts new and half-formed fictions from studies on sleep deprivation.

2157

by Grant Maierhofer

Abject and guttural science fiction that reminds us flesh is poor building materials.

HUNGRY KID NEEDS MONEY FROM PIGGY BANK (or: BORED KID NEEDS GEODE FROM ROCK)

by Shy Watson

This poem feels like watching a body fall apart. It’s funny and sad and makes my shoulders tense up.

anonymous sessions - chamber ii: interview with the syndicate

by Elytron Frass Cergat, and The Swarm

Correspondence between disembodied voices as they map out one another’s ambitions or desires.

About Mixtapes

These mixtapes are a way for the Neutral Spaces community to read and share each others writing.

The idea is to go through the site and select 5 pieces from 5 authors.

For Neutral Spaces authors, these get collected and you are given a space to write about your mini-collection.

On the page, the curator and the 5 selected authors have their website linked, together with the 5 external links for the chosen work.

If you run a journal, I would love to spotlight your site with 5 pieces, you can use the introduction to let people know what you're trying to do with your site.

If you want to put together a mixtape, e-mail me.
